Tracking Townshend (& Souster)
An interesting article I think you should take a look at. Great production ideas and approaches to recording.

Also, Townshend talks of Tim Souster …”I was getting steeped in extraordinary ideas by people like Tim Souster, Roger Powell, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and others.“ In a separate article discussing the Lifehouse project (http://www.wdkeller.com/lhcln.htm), of which “Who’s Next” was born, he says “my most earnest champion was the late Tim Souster composer-in-residence at Cambridge University and electronic music performer. He introduced me to Karl-Heinz Stockhausen and members of the BBC Radiophonics workshop.”
(I may be wrong, but I think Roger Powell is possibly an interestingly erroneous blend of Roger Smalley and Andrew Powell.)
For those of you who don’t know, Tim Souster was a composer, based in Cambridge from 1980. He wrote a great variety of music, including many pieces – combing solo instruments (such as soprano sax in “Zorna”), brass quintets and brass bands (as in “Equalisation” and “Echoes”) and orchestra (Concerto for Trumpet) with live electronics (controlled by one or several sound-projectionists).
Please have a look at his biography:

I worked with Tim as a sound-projectionist during the 1980s, as a student (while I was here at CCAT – ARU in a previous life!!) and after graduating, at venues including The Almeda Theatre – Islington, Queen Elizabeth Hall - London, Maida Vale (BBC) – London, St David’s Hall – Cardiff and The Pump Room – Chelmsford.
So, hopefully there’s a chance you might be interested in coming along to Little St. Mary’s, Trumpington, Cambridge on Saturday November 17th for a performance of Tim Souster’s “Echoes” – a piece for brass band and electronics, featuring the City of Cambridge Brass Band with sound projection by Gareth Stuart and Julio d’Escrivan.
